What Is a Hanging Lantern? Known locally as khom, hanging lanterns are a distinctive part of Northern Thailand’s Lanna culture. They come in many colours, shapes and decorative patterns and are traditionally displayed around temples and communities during the Yi Peng season.
Why Are Lanterns Hung? Hanging lanterns is a long-standing Lanna tradition associated with faith, merit-making and good wishes. During the festival, people may write their names or wishes on a lantern before hanging it, making the experience more personal and meaningful.
What Does the Lantern Symbolise? Light carries an auspicious meaning in Lanna tradition. The glow of a lantern is associated with brightness, prosperity, peace and well-being, giving each lantern a meaning that goes beyond its colourful appearance. What Makes Lamphun’s Festival Special? During the Hundred Thousand Hanging Lanterns Festival, thousands of colourful Lanna lanterns transform Lamphun into a spectacular display of light and colour. Held around the Yi Peng and Loy Krathong season, the festival offers a special opportunity to experience one of Northern Thailand’s most beautiful traditions while enjoying the festive atmosphere of Lamphun.
